What’s it
about?

“BACKSTAGE” is a short film written & directed by Émile V. Schlesser. It stars Tommy Schlesser, Sascha Ley, Jil Devresse and Jonathan Joel Albrecht.

about

“BACKSTAGE” is a compelling short film about power abuse set in the world of theater in today’s Luxembourg. A psychological exploration of how authority can be misused, and how one young person finds the strength to resist. Power abuse should not be tolerated and needs to be addressed, regardless of gender. We want to explore the complex circumstances that lead to power abuse, studied through the lens of misunderstanding and the difficulty of being able to “simply say no”.

LOGLINE

A theater production becomes a dangerous dance of power and attraction when a young actor discovers that the demanding director who holds his career in her hands may also be the one who will tear him apart, both on and off the stage.

the story

LUKAS, a rising actor, is cast in a theater production directed by the demanding COSIMA LAMBRECHT. Struggling with a key scene, Lukas becomes the target of Cosima’s inappropriate tactics, which gradually cross professional boundaries into unwanted intimacy. When PHILIPPE, a charismatic actor from Cosima's past, returns, Lukas is pushed aside and humiliated. After a failed attempt at intimacy on opening night, Lukas is locked in a dressing room and replaced by Philippe. But with unexpected help, Lukas is able to escape, confronts Cosima’s abuse of power, reclaiming his place on stage and finally standing up for himself.

Why this
project?

Power abuse is a situation that many of us have sadly experienced — the feeling of being trapped, manipulated, or even sexually harassed, while being unable to fight back or free oneself. This is a reality that resonates with many, particularly within industries like entertainment, where hierarchical structures and closed environments can easily foster manipulation and exploitation. Luxembourg is no exception — in fact, within the small and closely connected world of its cultural scene, these problems are rarely addressed openly. Backstage aims to address this pressing issue by exploring the unspoken dynamics of mentorship, ambition, and coercion, shedding light on the subtle, often invisible mechanisms of power abuse that occur behind closed doors.

our goal

Backstage aims to inspire conversations that challenge power dynamics and advocate for equity, fairness, and respect for all individuals, regardless of their position or gender. By addressing these universal themes, the film resonates with anyone seeking to contribute to a shift toward greater justice and accountability in both personal and professional settings.

our vision

The film will be told in rich, atmospheric visuals, with a focus on intimacy, light, and the blurring of boundaries between stage and real life. It’s a story about roles and masks, where identities shift and power dynamics constantly evolve.

The goal is to create emotional claustrophobia and a slow-burning suspense — captivating our audience until the very end.
