In the intense world of theater, where illusion and reality blur, a gripping drama unfolds about power, manipulation, and the quest for integrity.
“BACKSTAGE” is a Luxembourgish short film written & directed by Émile V. Schlesser, produced by Fabien Colas. It stars Tommy Schlesser, Sascha Ley, Jil Devresse and Jonathan Joel Albrecht.
LOGLINE
A theater production becomes a dangerous dance of power and seduction when a young actor discovers that the renowned director who holds his career in her hands may also be the one who will tear him apart, both on and off the stage.
the story
LUKAS, a rising actor, is cast in a theater production directed by the demanding COSIMA LAMBRECHT. Struggling with a key scene, Lukas becomes the target of Cosima’s inappropriate tactics, which gradually cross professional boundaries into unwanted intimacy. When PHILIPPE, a charismatic actor from Cosima's past, returns, Lukas is pushed aside and humiliated. After a failed attempt at intimacy on opening night, Lukas is locked in a dressing room and replaced by Philippe. But with unexpected help, Lukas is able to escape, confronts Cosima’s abuse of power, reclaiming his place on stage and finally standing up for himself.
What’s it
about?
Why this
project?
We want to shine a light on a pressing topic that is too often overlooked and tolerated, not just in the theater world, but in any kind of workplace – and no matter the gender constellation.
The story is highly relevant in today’s cultural climate. In the wake of MeToo and power balances, we want to offer a different perspective and spark an important conversation: Where does abuse of power begin? How does manipulation work? How far can you push your collaborators in order to achieve greatness?
The film offers a nuanced, emotional look at a toxic power dynamic between three artists, all striving for recognition, love, and control – without falling into simplistic portrayals of good vs. evil.
our vision
The film will be told in rich, atmospheric visuals, with a focus on intimacy, light, and the blurring of boundaries between stage and real life. It’s a story about roles and masks, where identities shift and power dynamics constantly evolve.
The goal is to create emotional claustrophobia and a slow-burning suspense — captivating our audience until the very end.
